Trade Secrets sheds a sensitive, honest spotlight on the destructive drug trade across Africa. The subjects range from hardened addicts in the streets of Malawi, streetwise dealers holed up in Kenya and the activists who aim to change their communities’ views on drug abuse. Where this calm and observant documentary shines is the respectful manner in which the subject’s point of view is communicated to the audience, with the film taking strides to humanise everyone involved. What we are left with is a film that, through the vehicle of exploring the drug trade in Africa, touches on themes of religious guilt and communal responsibility to the less fortunate.
