Cuban Dancer chronicles the life of young dancer Alexis Valdez, first in his home country of Cuba, and then in Miami, after his family emigrates to the USA, where he is forced to adjust and adapt his dance style to different cultural and technical demands. Made over the course of five years and infused with a gentle intimacy, the film has the feel and rhythms of a narrative feature due its engaging cinematography and choreographed interludes, as well as the onslaught of nail-biting auditions that Alexis must endure in his search for his place in the dance world. Set against the decrepitude and beauty of Havana and the slick abundance of Florida, the film is a both a personal narrative and a document of the power of dance to ignite the human soul.
